06.06.2014 09:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Sustainable energy has been described by the UN Secretary-General as a «golden» thread that links poverty eradication, equitable economic growth and a healthy environment, UN Radio says referring to the Ban Ki-moon report made at the first annual Sustainable Energy for All Forum at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday.
Ban Ki-moon admitted the commitment worth billions of dollars have been pledged and delivered and more than 80 developing countries have joined the initiative to make power accessible to people.
«Modern energy services are the key to changing peoples quality of life. Clinics can store life-saving vaccines. Children can study after dark. Food can be produced and conserved better. Cleaner cook stoves can save the lives of millions of women and children every year. Electricity can power street lights. That will make women safer. Businesses can flourish and create new jobs,» Mr. Ban emphasized.
The Secretary-General said everyone, rich and poor in all countries, will benefit from modern energy services.
The UN Decade for Sustainable Energy for All was officially launched on Thursday.
