UN: States urged to fulfill obligations to environmental protection
05.06.2014 09:59 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments around the world have been urged to ensure that people live in safe environments and that activists working on environmental issues are protected, UN Radio reports.
The call has come from John Knox, the UN independent expert on human rights and the environment on the eve of World Environment Day.
He says environmental degradation, including harm from climate change, desertification, air and water pollution and exposure to toxic substances impair the enjoyment of a vast range of human rights.
They include the right to life, to health and to an adequate standard of living.
The expert also calls on states to assess the impact of projects that affect the environment, to make environmental information public and to enable broader participation in decision-making processes.
Word Environment Day is observed on 5 June and this year it is focusing on small island developing states.
