Barbados chosen to host World Environment Day

The Caribbean island of Barbados has been chosen to host the UNs World Environment Day celebrated on June 5, UN Radio reports.
The theme for this years celebrations is «Small Island Developing States and Climate Change».
Barbados is considered to be highly vulnerable to shifts in climate.
Agricultural could suffer and coastal ecosystems may be destroyed.
The 430-square kilometre nation has taken significant steps to reduce climate impact and to provide clean, renewable energy.
It has also created opportunities for green economic growth through its National Strategic Plan.
As the host, Barbados will have the opportunity to showcase its initiatives and to act as an example to other nations facing similar challenges.
The celebration of the World Environment Day began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations encourages positive action for the environment.
