The spread of polio has been declared an international public health emergency by the Head of the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Radio reports.
This follows a meeting of the Emergency Committee for the international spread of the wild polio virus in Geneva last week.
According to WHO, polio has re-emerged in ten countries: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Iraq Israel, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia and Syria.
The Committee also highlighted the risk of polio infection in countries considered «polio free» but affected by conflict where it would be difficult to mount an effective response.
