05.05.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The UN Secretary-General has called on world leaders to «usher in a new era of climate actions» to help reverse the acceleration towards global warming, UN Radio reports.
Ban Ki-moon made this appeal to heads of state and government, and other leaders at a meeting he co-hosted with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government.
During the Abu Dhabi Ascent named after the host city, thousands of participants discussed new solutions for reducing greenhouse gases and strengthening climate resilience.
Mr. Ban said the two-day event is a «launching pad» for the UN Climate Summit to be held in September in New York.
«Our meeting here in Abu Dhabi is a major milestone on the „ascent“ to the [Climate] Summit. It gives you a chance to experience the wealth of opportunity that exists so you can leave here ready to join others in acting. We have identified 9 key areas for fast and meaningful results. They include energy, cities and transport, finance, resilience, agriculture and short-lived climate pollutants,» Mr. Ban emphasized.
Many of the climate solutions the world needs already exist while many others are being rapidly developed, the UN chief noted.
He urged leaders to confront the challenges now saying there may not be a second chance".
Meanwhile, UAEs foreign minister said the Gulf country has invested «locally, regionally and internationally» in climate mitigation strategies and it has «pioneered efforts to encourage other countries in the region to embrace clean technology».
