A culture of accountability is important to assess progress and achieve results in regards to the UNs new development agenda, UN Radio says referring to
the UN Secretary-General Thursday report.
Ban Ki-moon spoke at a meeting of the General Assembly to discuss a framework to ensure accountability for the post-2015 development agenda. He reminded that the year 2015 is the deadline for meeting the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty, fight diseases and promote gender equality.
Also, the Secretary-General Ban said that in order to succeed, there is a need for actions to turn commitments into results and to monitor, review and evaluate those results.
«Accountability is essential to assess progress and achieve results. This should happen at the national, regional and global levels. All actors, including governments, the UN system, civil society and the private sector, should be accountable for honouring their commitments. We need an inclusive, robust yet flexible accountability framework,» Mr. Ban emphasized.
The Secretary-General said that for its part, the United Nations is making every possible effort to build an effective development system for the post-2015 era.
