Yatseniuk: Ukraine wants Russia to immediately implement Geneva agreement
22.04.2014 10:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukraine wants Russia to immediately implement the agreements reached at a quadripartite meeting in Geneva on April 17 and signed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said at an emergency government meeting late on Thursday, NRCU reports.
«The quadrilateral meeting in Geneva has ended. A joint statement has been adopted at the meeting. Russia had to condemn extremists. This statement, signed by Russia, envisages the immediate disarmament of illegal armed groups on in Luhansk, Donetsk and other eastern regions. The decision also foresees that seized buildings must be immediately vacated,» he said.
«Following this agreement, we expect Russia to immediately withdraw its subversive groups,» the prime minister said. He also appealed to extremists and terrorists who illegally occupied administrative buildings, as well as Interior Ministry and SBU buildings: «Russia had to sign the agreement. Come out, your time is up.» The prime minister said that Ukraine, for its part, would fulfill the Geneva agreements. As reported, following a quadrilateral meeting in Geneva, the foreign policy chiefs of Ukraine, the United States, the EU and Russia approved a joint document that contains initial steps to defuse tensions in east Ukraine.
The sides agreed that the OSCE should play a leading role in assisting the Ukrainian authorities and local communities in the immediate implementation of these de-escalation measures, especially in disarming militants and vacating occupied buildings. In this regard, the United States, the EU and Russia committed to support this mission, including by providing monitors.
