Fukushima: water filtering system crashes again, threatens decontamination works
18.03.2014 18:12 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Tokyo Electric Power Co. which deals with the aftermaths of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant disaster and ensures its future stability, found Tuesday that one of the water filtering systems was not functioning properly, Voice of Russia reports referring to Japantimes.co.jp.
Tepco stopped the operations of all three radioactive water cleanup systems, referred to as Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.
The decision was made when it was found out that one of the water filtering systems was not functioning properly.
Water samples were taken from System B on Monday, showing high levels of radioactive substances, such as strontium-90, drop to several tens of millions of becquerels from several hundred million becquerels.
This was less than expected at the time when system was implemented, as a result Tepco decided to stop the operation completely until all existing issues are resolved.
ALPS is considered to be the main solution to the issue of the radioactive water at Fukushima. Still, the hardest part of the clean-up is yet to begin.
Preliminary estimates show that the company will be able to finish its job only by the end of next March, and this happens only if the system is functioning properly.
Tepco has not yet decided what to do with water processed by ALPS. Due to the system’s imperfection, it still contains tritium, the only substance the system can’t remove, so the problem still stands for Japan years after the tragedy occurred.
