UN rights official denied entry into Crimea
13.03.2014 09:23 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
A senior UN official has been denied access to the Ukrainian region of Crimea, where he had hoped to carry out an assessment of the human rights situation.
Ivan Šimonović is the Assistant-Secretary-General for Human Rights.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the reasons were the complexity of the situation on the ground as well as the impossibility of providing security for the UN delegation.
«Mr. Šimonović had very much hoped he could travel to Crimea himself. But as in all areas where access is denied, Mr. Šimonović will report on human rights challenges in Crimea based on sources including the diplomatic community and international and national organizations,» Mr.Dujarric admitted.
Earlier, Mr. Šimonović had faced logistical challenges trying to get to Crimea due to limited flights in and out of the regions main airport, Simferopol.
He had been to Lviv on Wednesday and met with local authorities, the Ombudsperson and representatives of civil society.
