UN continues to stress need for calm in resolving Ukraine situation

UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson has stressed the need for calm in resolving the situation in Ukraine, UN Radio reports.
Diplomatic efforts are continuing since Russian troops entered the Ukrainian Crimea region of the country.
Mr. Jan Eliasson continued his visit to Ukraine on Tuesday where he met with the countrys acting President, Prime Minister and acting Foreign Minister.
«In his meetings, the Deputy Secretary-General stressed the need for calm and international unity in the pursuit of peace. He also reiterated the Secretary-General’s call that Ukraine’s territorial integrity should be respected and preserved. The Deputy Secretary-General also held meetings with diplomatic representatives in Kiev. As part of the mission, the Deputy Secretary-General has asked Robert Serry to travel to Crimea in order to take stock of and evaluate the situation there,» UN Spokesperson Martin Nesirky says.
Robert Serry, Senior Adviser to UN Secretary-General was initially asked to visit Crimea on 1 March.
Jan Eliasson is in Ukraine to gather facts on the ground and is expected to brief the Secretary-General on the next steps the UN could take to support the de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine.
