European Parliament supports Ukraine's unity - draft resolutions
26.02.2014 19:16 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The European Parliament has expressed support for the territorial integrity and unity of Ukraine; this is stated in draft resolutions on Ukraine, which were proposed by six political groups in the European Parliament, NRCU reports referring to Ukrinform.
«The European Parliament ñalls on all sides and third countries to protect the unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine; recalls that the existing borders of Ukraine were guaranteed by the United States of America, the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom in the Budapest memorandum on security assurances,» reads a draft document from the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists.
The joint provision on the inadmissibility of Russias intervention in Ukraines sovereign choice was included their draft resolution by the political groups of the European Peoples Party, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, as well as the Greens group.
«The European Parliament calls on Moscow to adopt a constructive attitude and to stop retaliatory measures and undue pressure aimed at undermining the sovereign right of its neighbors to freely determine their future,» read the draft resolutions.
The European Parliament also rejected the idea of a new partition of Europe based on areas of influence. The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, in turn, warned that further escalation of violence could be disruptive to the Ukrainian nation and undermine unity and territorial integrity.
«The European Parliament believes that restoring a sense of national unity, especially within the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, is essential for achieving political stability, preserving territorial integrity and building a genuine and sustainable democracy,» the European Social Democrats said.
They also warned against actions that might contribute to heightened polarization along ethnic or language lines, and reiterated their call for an inclusive approach to minimize the risk of renewed violence and territorial fragmentation; The leading political groups in the European Parliament also mentioned in their draft resolutions Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union, stating that Ukraine can apply for EU membership if the necessary criteria are met.
