UN Chief calls for peaceful dialogue to resolve Ukraine crisis
25.02.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has once again called for non-violence and urged all Ukrainians to express their differences peacefully and through dialogue, UN Radio reports.
More than 22 people were killed in violent clashes between riot police and protestors in the capital Kiev on 18 February, prompting senior UN officials to decry the excessive use of force.
Demonstrations began in the country in November 2013 to press for closer integration with the European Union.
In a statement released on Monday, Mr. Ban said he continued to «closely follow the rapidly unfolding events in Ukraine» and remained in «continual contact» with key actors to support a peaceful way forward for Ukraine.
Mr. Ban also sent his senior advisor Robert Serry to Ukraine to assure the people of the support of the UN and the wider international community.
Mr. Serry met with the new Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Oleksander Turchinov and conveyed the Secretary-Generals message of solidarity.
The Secretary-General has called for an inclusive political process, reflecting the aspirations of Ukrainians and preserving Ukraines unity and territorial integrity.
