The exercise of restraint is being urged in Ukraine following the killing of more than 22 people during violent clashes between riot police and protesters in the capital, Kiev on Tuesday, UN Radio reports.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is shocked and gravely concerned about the escalation of violence in the country and is calling for the immediate renewal of dialogue.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay is urging the government and the protestors to defuse the tensions and find a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis.
Ravina Shamdasani is a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.
«We are extremely concerned about the latest developments in Ukraine. The High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has been asking for months now on all parties to exercise restraint and we were very alarmed to hear that more than 22 people were killed during violent clashes in Kiev between riot police and protestors yesterday and we understand that the clashes are continuing today,» Mrs. Shamdasani says.
Thousands of people began protesting in Ukraine in November 2013 to press for closer integration with the European Union.
