The concerns, challenges and successes experienced by young migrants around the world have been documented in an annual UN report.
The 2013 World Youth Report, which was released on last week Friday, offers a global snapshot of the situation of young migrants, UN Radio says.
As to report, the international migration has increased steadily over the years and now stands at over 230 million worldwide. Some 30 per cent are under 29 years old.
Young people give a variety of reasons for migrating including personal and economic circumstances, such as job and educational prospects as well as the political situation in their country of origin.
A smaller, although significant number of young people, are forced to migrate as a result of natural or man-made circumstances.
In 2013, 15 million international migrants were refugees.
The report says that the impacts of youth migration are mixed.
Young migrants can improve both their own financial situation and the economic circumstances of their families.
However, countries of origin can suffer from negative impacts of brain drain, notably of health and education professionals.
