Azov Sea on verge of fishing disaster
23.12.2013 14:54 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
In 1991, the Azov Sea could boast more than 50 species of game fish. Now only three species anchovy, goby and pilenhas are left for full-fledged fish catching, NRCU reports referring to the Ukrainian Fishermen Association press service.
Besides, according to the State Environmental Inspectorate, over the past decade in the Azov Sea the volume of pilenhas catch decreased more than twofold, walleye threefold. The Inspectorate officials believe the main reason is the massive pollution of the Azov Sea with industrial and household sewage, poor maintenance of fisheries and inadequate protection of aquatic resources. Considerable damage has been also caused by poaching. It is to be admitted, over a dozen species of the Azov Sea fish have been included into the Red Book of Ukraine as an endangered species.
