President: Ukraine is driven by national interests in signature of Association Agreement
03.12.2013 11:40 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governmental actions in the signature of the Association Agreement with the EU are aimed at the protection of national interests. It was stated by the President in the interview to Ukrainian TV journalists, President Viktor Yanukovych Press Office reports.
«We want to achieve better terms in this Agreement because they are first of all related to our economic interests,» the President said.
«If we say that we want to improve the conditions, it means that we want to improve them for everyone,» Viktor Yanukovych noted.
In that context, the Head of State emphasized the necessity of holding separate discussion in Ukraine on the signature of the Association Agreement.
«I am not only suggesting, I am confident that we must hold this discussion for the civil society to provide an assessment of what we want to achieve, what conditions and why we put the question in such a way. It is very important to understand that we are protecting our interests,» the President stressed.
According to the Head of State, many things have been done hastily in the preparation to the signature of the Association Agreement.
«The executors that elaborated this agreement… many of them do not hold the post anymore and they will not bear responsibility for it. Thus, the signature of the Association Agreement under less beneficial terms will be on our own head,» Viktor Yanukovych said.
The President commented on the non-signing of the Agreement in Vilnius. «Who is guilty? The current government. But the government does not keep silent, it says it loud,» Viktor Yanukovych noted adding that the economic risks of signing the Agreement had also been reported by the Academy of Sciences.
«We are talking about the conditions after the signature of the Agreement. If they are satisfactory Im for them, I really want this. If they are not satisfactory I must do everything to protect our own interests,» the Head of State noted.
«Is it an agreement when someone „bends“ us? I think we shouldnt yield. We must protect our interests,» Viktor Yanukovych said.
