Azarov: Ukraine can resolve its problems without IMF loans
24.09.2013 14:51 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The last two years have shown that Ukraine can cope with its problems individually, without any loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV channel on Monday, NRCU reports.
«We expect some changes in the position of the IMF, because the past two years have shown that Ukraine is able to cope with its problems independently, without IMF loans,» he said. Azarov also added that, if necessary, if an agreement on the provision of a loan is not reached with the IMF, Ukraine will live without these funds or borrow money in «other places». The prime minister said that today Ukraine’s state debt according to international standards is not very big and is 32% of GDP. According to Azarov, Ukraine has repaid over $7 billion over the last two years. However, he said that talks with the IMF on a technical level had not stopped. The Finance Ministry is in constant contact with the headquarters and the mission of the IMF in Kyiv. He also said that Ukraine’s fundamental position at the talks is that the government cannot shift the burden of high prices for Russian gas onto the public, as proposed by the IMF.
