ECOSOC forum encourages young people to innovate their future
28.03.2013 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Leveraging innovation brought about by science and technology is the focus of a day-long youth forum at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday.
Hosted by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it brings together young people and specialists in areas such as internet business, social media and medical research, UN Radio reports.
Internet activist Wael Ghonim was involved in the pro-democracy demonstrations in his homeland, Egypt, in 2011.
«The change that happened in the region where I come from, the Arab region, the past decade or so, was mainly driven by the openness of communication and the technology thats driving more people to communicate and to collaborate together. Governments were much slower in understanding this and adapting to it and the result was more frustration from the youth and more ignorance from the side of government until it of course yielded to the sequence of events that took place in the past few years. And I believe also its continually making change in the region,» Mr. Ghonim admitted.
Other experts taking part in the forum include a Ugandan woman who founded a non-profit for women in technology, and a grassroots campaigner who works to bring about social change in India.
