State Reserve Sells Six Tons Of Sugar To Stabilize Market Prices
15.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - The State Committee for Material Reserves has sold six tons of sugar from the state reserve to stabilize prices on the domestic market, chairman of the State Foodstuffs Department Yurii Zhykharev announced at a press conference. He added that owing to this step wholesale sugar prices fell by UAH 50 per ton from UAH 2,700 to UAH 2,650 per ton last week. Zhykharev noted that sugar prices will remain stable in near future thanks to imported raw sugar supplied for processing to the plants. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, wholesale sugar prices fell by 1.85% or UAH 50 per ton to UAH 2,650 per ton from March 29 to April 4. Sugar production from sugar beet harvest-2002 fell by 14.1% or 234,000 tons compared with 2001, to 1,430,000 tons. The capacity of the domestic market for sugar is estimated at 2 million tons a year. According to specialists, there are 150,000-200,000 tons of sugar in the state reserve. (Ukrainian News)
