Farmers Plan To Reduce Sugar Beet Sowing By 4% To 0.89 Million Hectares In 2003
15.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - In 2003 farmers intends to reduce sugar beet sowing by 4.3% or 40,000 hectares to 891,900 hectares comapred with 2002. The State Statistic Committee disclosed to Ukrainian News citing data of agricultural farms. Accordin to the State Statistic Committee, farms plan to sow 681,200 hectares, individual farms — 210,700 hectares. Experts supose that this year sugar beet acreage will be reduced because in autumn 2002 agrarians have not prepared acreage for sowing of sugar beet. Experts note, that some last years agrarians reduce sugar beet acreage. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Agricultural Policy Ministry forecasts that in 2003 farmers will sow sugar beet on not less than 932,000 hectares, which coincides with 2002 indicators. In 2002, sugar beet harvest fell by 7.7% or 1.198 million tons compared with 2001, to 14.376 million tons. That year farmers reduced area under sugar beet by 3.9% or 38,100 hectares compared with 2001 to 932,200 hectares. (Ukrainian News)
