Asia-Pacific governments seek to halt effects of climate pollutants
05.02.2013 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Government representatives from across Asia-Pacific are meeting in Bangkok to find ways to reduce the effects of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in the region.
This is the first regional gathering on this issue, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Radio reports.
The agency says SLCPs such as soot, methane and some hydrofluorocarbons are responsible for a percentage of global warming and can be dangerous to human health, agriculture and ecosystems.
A 2011 UNEP study found that aggressive action to reduce SLCPs by 2030 could prevent more than two million premature deaths and 30 million tonnes in annual crop losses.
UNEP adds that action also could slow glacier melting in the Himalayas as well as reduce disruption of the South Asian monsoon.
