Ukraine signs two international agreements on genetic resources

Ukrainian Environment and Natural Resources Minister Mykola Zlochevsky has signed two international agreements on genetic resources in New York (the United States) on behalf of Ukraine — the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the press service of the Ukrainian Environment and Natural Resources Ministry has reported, according to UKRINFORM.
«Transparency in the use, access and transfer of genetic materials is very important for Ukraine, because we are talking about the environmental safety of our country. From now on, this sphere will be regulated not only by domestic law, but also by international procedures,» the official said.
The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international agreement which aims at sharing the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies, taking into account all rights over those resources and to technologies, and by appropriate funding, thereby contributing to the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components.
The Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is aimed at contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health, by providing international rules and procedures in the field of liability and redress relating to living modified organisms.
