Climate change: Another year of record gas emissions, warns UN meteorological agency

Levels of the three main heat-trapping gases emitted into the atmosphere — carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and nitrous oxide — have reached yet another high, UN Radio says referring to the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin issued by the WMO (UN World Meteorological Organization) as of this week.
As to the Bulletin, as of 2018, the global averaged concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) reached 407.8 parts per million, up against 405.5 parts per million (ppm) as of 2017.
Besides, the CO2 growth from 2017 to 2018 was very close to that observed from 2016 to 2017 and just above the average over the last decade. It is to be admitted, the global levels of CO2 crossed the symbolic and significant 400 parts per million benchmark within 2015.
In meanwhile, while commenting on the Bulletin, WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas appealed to world governments to do more to reverse countries’ reliance on producing energy from fossil fuels, in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change; he also warned that «the future welfare of mankind» was at stake.
As to the Bulletin, since 1990, so-called «long-lived» greenhouse gases have caused a 43% growth of the global total radiative forcing — the warming effect on the climate.
