Coffee. Uganda Output to Continue Expanding

According to the report of the USDA Coffee: World Markets and Trade (June 2025), in 2025/26, Uganda is forecast to produce 5.8 million bags (60 kilograms) of Robusta coffee and 1.1 million bags of Arabica, remaining the world’s fourth-largest Robusta producer behind Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia. Coffee production is vital to the Ugandan economy, generating nearly 20 percent of foreign exchange earnings from $1.1 billion of exports in 2024. Top markets include the European Union, United States, Sudan, and India. In the last 5 years, total coffee area in Uganda gained 5 percent to reach 590,000 hectares. While coffee production is spread throughout most of Uganda, it is concentrated in three regions. The South Western Region includes Robusta and Arabica coffee and accounts for nearly half of output. The Greater Masaka and the Central Region are dominated by Robusta production with each contributing about 15 percent to total output. Over 85 percent of production comes from 1.8 million small family farms ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 hectares. These growers often intercrop with bananas, beans, and vanilla to enhance soil fertility and moisture. The practice has the advantage of diversifying income but comes at the expense of yield. Over the last 20 years, the Ugandan government created several programs to improve the coffee sector’s competitiveness and sustainability. During this time, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) implemented the Coffee Production Campaign, which was followed by the National Coffee Policy. The strategic objectives were to increase production and productivity, modernize post-harvest handling and storage, expand consumption domestically and internationally, and develop loan programs.
