It is to be admitted, the World Cotton Day has been established by the initiative of the «C-4» countries- Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali; thus, the event devoted to the Day was hosted at the WTO headquarters with the support of FAO, the UN Conference on Trade and Development and other organizations. As to the report, while speaking within the event, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu highlighted the importance of cotton worldwide. «Cotton represents so much more than just a commodity: It is a culture, a way of life, and a tradition that finds its roots at the heart of human civilization,» he said. «Cotton provides employment and income for some of the poorest or most remote rural areas in the world,» Qu added. «It is critical that the cotton sector meets the highest standards of sustainability at all stages of the value chain,» Director-General said. As to the report, Qu also spoke at a side event organized by FAO to discuss market and policy trends for the cotton sector (which has an annual turnover of around US$50milliard with a production of 25million tonnes within 75countries). International cotton trade is estimated US$18milliard annually. As to the report, he also remided the cotton is a major source of livelihoods and incomes for many rural smallholders and laborers, including women, providing employment and income to some of the poorest rural areas worldwide.
