Green Climate Fund approves major FAO climate change resilience project within Pakistan

08.07.2019 15:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) As of last week, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board approved a FAO project designed to transform Indus River Basin (Pakistan) by improving agriculture and water management to make this vital food-producing region more resilient to climate change, FAO reports. It is to be admitted, the Green Climate Fund is a fund established within the framework of the UNFCCC as an operating entity of the Financial Mechanism to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change. The GCF is based within Incheon, South Korea. It is governed by a Board of 24members and supported by a Secretariat. As to the report, the GCF has provided FAO with a grant of nearly US$35million for this work, while the Pakistani provincial governments of Punjab and Sindh have committed an additional US$12.7million in co-financing to be managed by FAO. Reportedly, while welcoming the GCF decision, Maria Helena Semedo, FAO Deputy Director-General, Climate and Natural Resources said: «We are at a critical moment that calls for bold climate action that can stimulate concrete solutions to help build resilience. The approval of this project- the first FAO-led GCF project within Asia- is an important step forward within the FAO broader support to countries to respond to climate change, within partnership with the GCF».
