FAO Chief hails international treaty combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing
04.06.2019 14:16 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this week, the Second Meeting of the Parties to the PSMA (Port State Measures Agreement) is held within Chile, FAO reports.
As to the report, while greeting the meeting participants, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva has urged the countries to the PSMA rapid international adoption in order to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
It is to be admitted, the PSMA, an international treaty brokered by the FAO, entered into force as of 2016. Today, 87 countries are Parties and another 18 are formally preparing to adhere.
«Today I see a room filled with many more delegates than two years ago,» Graziano da Silva said.
It is to be reminded, the PSMA requires foreign vessels to submit to inspections at any port of call, if deemed necessary by port states, and for such states to share information on detected violations. The agreement strengthens prior rules requiring countries to control the activities of their own fishing fleets and is designed to raise the cost of IUU fishing by making it harder for wrongly-caught fish to be sold.
It is to be admitted, on the agenda of the currently held Second Meeting of the Parties to the PSMA are agreeing rules of procedure by which parties can govern the administrative aspects of the PSMA, further technical protocols for how parties will exchange information, and focus on how to assure funding mechanisms that allow developing countries to implement the treaty provisions.
«This is an important meeting for food security at the global level,» said Jose Ramon Valente, Chile Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, while speaking to the meeting participants. «From now until 2050, the worlds population will need more protein, without saturated fats, and thats what ocean products offer,» he added.
It is to be admitted, the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing will be celebrated as of Jun 5.
