US asks China for lower ethanol tariffs

While commenting on the US-China trade talks within Washington, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said yesterday that US trade negotiators asked China to reduce tariffs on US ethanol, but it was not immediately clear whether Beijing was willing to oblige, Reuters reports.
«They are engaged in conversation, they listen and hear us, but we are at this stage unable to determine the willingness factor,» he told.
It is to be reminded, Beijing last summer had imposed retaliatory tariffs of up to 70% on US ethanol shipments — what made the US export unprofitable.
«We would certainly love below 15%,» he said, referring to the tariff level. He did not say what the exact level US negotiators were seeking.
It is to be admitted, Washington and Beijing have been locked within intense negotiations to end a trade war between the world two largest economies that had cost both countries milliards of dollars and roiled global financial markets.
As to Perdue, there was a number of agricultural issues discussed within the trade talks, including poultry access, issues over beef exports feed grains, ethanol and an animal feed known as distillers grains.
It is to be reminded, as of Sun, US President Donald Trump had said he would delay a boost of the US tariffs on US$200 milliard of Chinese goods and extend his Mar 1 deadline for a deal. It remains unclear how long the tariff boost would be delayed.
Washington wants Beijing to change the way it does business with the United States, demanding more access for US companies, enforcement of intellectual property protection and an end to industrial subsidies.
