Ukrainian 3 million ha lands face critical water shortage

As of yesterday, a roundtable discussion «Will Ukraine already have to import drinking water by 2050, or earlier?» was held at the Ukrinform, Ukrinform reports.
As to the report, while speaking within the discussion, Dmytro Nadeyev, Head of the Clean Dnipro Public Organization, told that over a half of the Ukrainian total 31 million arable lands now suffer a clean water deficit, with 3 million ha being within a zone of critical humidity. Without taking the urgent measures, the arid area can grow additionally by 30% until 2050.
«Ukraine urgently needs a policy of water conservation and efficient water use. At present, 18 million ha of the Ukrainian total arable 31 million ha are a moisture deficit territory, and 3 million ha are within a zone of the moisture critical deficit. Without taking any measures for water saving and water efficiency, the area of arid and very arid lands can grow by additional 20–30% until 2050,» Nedeyev admits.
As to him, Ukraine is a country with a low level of fresh water resources’ provision per capita.
