Zimbabwe faces food shortages rise
11.02.2019 23:06 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of recent, the number of people facing hunger within Zimbabwe has surged due to the drought and economic shocks including the rising food prices and a shortage of cash, Reuters says referring to the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee report.
As to the report, Zimbabwe has experienced intermittent food shortages since the government began an often violent land-reform program within 2000 that resulted in the seizure of mostly white-owned commercial farms. The situation has been aggravated by droughts that resulted in the country becoming a net importer of soybeans, which are mostly used as animal feed, and often maize. As to the report, as of now the proportion of people facing food insecurity has jumped to 52% of the capital total population, Harare, up against 46% forecasted last year; the ratio is 33% within the second-biggest city of Bulawayo (up against earlier forecasted 28%). At same time, within the rural areas, the number of people facing hunger is estimated at 51% of population (up against earlier forecasted 28%).
