At COP24, countries agree concrete way forward to bring the Paris climate deal to life

17.12.2018 19:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of last week Sat, after two weeks of crunch negotiations, with overtime, representatives of almost 200 countries gathered within Katowice (Poland) for the United Nations COP24 two-week climate change conference, adopted a «robust» set of guidelines to support the 2015 Paris Agreement, UN Radio reports. As to the report, the set of guidelines adopted by the Conference is aimed at keeping global warming well below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels, Reportedly, after a number of sleepless nights, cheers and applause, the attendees welcomed the COP24 President, Michal Kurtyka, as he opened the Conference closing plenary meeting, which had been postponed about a dozen times. As to the report, Kurtyka thanked hundreds of delegates for their «patience», noting that the last night «was a long night». Reportedly, one of the main issues of the «Katowice Agreement» is aimed at boosting of all the measures’ transparency. This issue is to strengthen trust between countries and provides for the exchange of information on the implementation of national plans to combat climate change ( which include greenhouse gas emission reduction and adaptation measures). Besides, another issue of the «Katowice Agreement» is the unified approach to estimate the volume of emissions (that is, the Conference participants have found out the method to calculate the level of pollution practically). Besides, the Conference participants also agreed that is some low-income country can not fulfill its commitments, it can explain the reasons for unfulfilment and present a plan to overcome the obstacles within the future. As to the report, the meeting participants also agreed that after 2025, the high-income countries will boost their financial aid to combat climate change within the developing countries. It is to be reminded, until 2020, the global community must allocate US$100 milliard annually to combat climate change. As to the report, another significant achievement of the Conference is that the parties agreed on the method to evaluate the effectiveness of measures to combat climate change. «As a result of the negotiations, which lasted about 24 hours, the Condference delegations have established the rules that clearly distribute the responsibility between all the countries,» Patricia Espinosa, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat Head, summed up.
