Soil pollution ‘jeopardizing’ life on Earth, FAO warns
06.12.2018 17:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, within his message to mark the World Soil Day (celebrated annually Dec 5), FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva said soil is a «treasure beneath our feet» essential to human lives and well-being, but now this invaluable resource is under constant threat from the phenomenon of soil pollution, UN Radio reports.
As to him, human activities are the primary source of this «invisible» pollution.
Thousands of chemicals used within every-day life and tonnes of urban, industrial and agricultural waste come into the soil, leaving it «bare and degraded».
Besides, with soil essential to providing food for 95 per cent of the world, soil pollution not only reduces the quantity and quality of crops and produce, it also worsens poverty and compromises the future for generations to come.
But, with everyone taking action to prevent soil degradation, the challenges can be overcome, said Mr. Graziano da Silva, urging everyone to «be a part of the solution.»
The theme for this year’s commemoration is just that: «be the solution to soil pollution» and so FAO offered a number of recommendations to urban dwellers and agrarians worldwide to lessen the impact of the contemporary technological civilization upon the rural soils.
