Ireland restores sugar beet cultivation
04.09.2018 22:44 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of recent, Ireland has started restoring its sugar beet cultivation, with the focus made on high-performance hybrids, and the sugar to be just one of the many bioproducts which are expected to be received from the sugar beet cultivation, Ukrainian National Association of Sugar Producers says referring to AgroXXI.ru report.
As to the report, now there is a steady demand for sugar beet in the world - what makes producers receive more sugar beet using less resources and land. For that, new, high-yielding varieties of sugar beet, less «capricious» in cultivation than their predecessors, are needed.
So, Professor Charles Spillayn Genetics and Biotechnology Laboratory at the NUI Galway Research Center now works closely with KWS SAAT international breeding company to develop strategies for genetic breeding of hybrid varieties of sugar beet with higher yields at minimum cost. Thus, using a combination of laboratory work within the field of molecular genetics and large-scale experimental field trials, the research team found that the most effective way to grow sugar beets is to use the benefits of «hybrid energy.»
It is to be admitted, sugar beets were once widely cultivated within Ireland, where the first sugar beet processing factory was built within 1851.
However, the possibility of a renaissance of the Ireland sugar industry has appeared as of 2017, with the abolition of the EU sugar quota. Since then, a group of producers, such as Beet Ireland, have sought to restore sugar beet as a sustainable and environmentally friendly culture that is consistent with the general policy of organic farming.
Upon whole, the sugar beet industry within Europe is experiencing a second birth, with the new sugar plants being built.
