Ban: "Urgent action on a global scale" is needed to protect our oceans
09.06.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking to mark the World Oceans Day (celebrated annually Jun 8), the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the «urgent action on a global scale» is needed to protect the world oceans and ease the pressures they face from climate change, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the Secretary-General warned that «future dangers» could damage their ecosystems beyond repair.
Reportedly, Ban admitted that the First Global Integrated Marine Assessment (held within last year Dec), showed for the first time how fragile the world oceans really are.
As to Ban, presently we know that their capacity to withstand human impact is not endless, especially when it comes to dealing with the effects of man-made climate change.
«Healthy oceans are critical to sustaining life on earth» he added, and only global action could halt damage to marine environments that might be irreparable.
Also, the UN Secretary-General admitted that the World Oceans Day gave everyone the chance to commit to protecting oceans, and using «their gifts peacefully, equitably, and sustainably for generations to come».
