Zeid Ra’ad: Rights "window-dressing" is widespread
11.03.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the UN High Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said protection of peoples rights should not be a «tick-the-box» paper exercise for the international community, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, Zeid Ra’ad highlighted abuses in nearly 50 countries worldwide and called for states to do more to bring about «real change» on the ground.
Reportedly, in his 50-minute speech covering as many countries, the UN Human Rights chief expressed serious concern at abuses the world over. Zeid Ra’ad pointed out problems in country after country: from EU proposals to Turkey as for the migrants, up to the conflicts and humanitarian crises in Yemen, South Sudan, Iraq, Syria and beyond.
However, beside that, Zeid Ra’ad brought another take-away message for these countries: that is,
they need to do more to uphold the binding principles of human rights.
Failure to do so, he said, risked turning the Human Rights Council into «theatre».
«Human rights obligations should not be a tick-the-box exercise designed only to boost a countrys international image. Unless consequential at the level of the rights of the individual, the work we do will remain bureaucratic or even theatre.»
As to the report, Zeid Ra’ad even went so far as to talk about the practice of «human rights window-dressing», saying it was «widespread».
