"New hope" for World AIDS Day, UN Chief says
02.12.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
This years World AIDS day should be marked with «new hope», UN Radio reports referring to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon annual message to mark the day.
As to the report, in his annual message to mark the World AIDS day (held annually on Dec 1), Mr. Ban paid tribute to health workers and human rights activists who battle the disease.
It is to be reminded, presently about 37 million people live with HIV around the world.
It is to be admitted, the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by world leaders at UN headquarters in Sept, include an ambitious commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
As to the report, Mr. Ban said that a new «Fast-Track» approach was needed to, in his words, «close the gap between needs and services».
He said that to prevent the epidemic from rebounding, action was still needed on all fronts, especially when it comes to protecting adolescent girls, young women and children from infection.
HIV-related stigma was still an issue, he said, and he pointed to the UN General Assemblys high level meeting next year on AIDS as a «critical chance» to fast-track the end of AIDS.
Besides, he described the decades-long fight against AIDS as «one of the most inclusive movements in modern history.»
