Treatment of migrants "sheer hypocrisy", says EU
30.09.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
While speaking within the high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk said the refusal of some countries to accept migrants fleeing crises in various parts of the world is «sheer hypocrisy» shown by the European Union, UN Radio reports.
It is to be reminded, over 6,000 people arrive on Europe’s shores every day, principally from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Almost half a million migrants have arrived in Europe so far this year, sparking a continent-wide crisis.
Many are fleeing persecution, conflict and human rights abuses, enduring arduous journeys to reach Europe.
Some have made the perilous trip across the Mediterranean Sea on boats operated by people-smugglers.
As to the report, Donald Tusk said European countries had made significant efforts to relocate migrants.
«By contrast, many countries represented here deal with this problem in a much more simple way; namely by not allowing migrants and refugees to enter their territories at all. This is why suggesting that Europe is an example of poor treatment or indifference towards asylum-seekers is sheer hypocrisy,» he said.
As to him, the international community is due to discuss migration and refugee issues on the margins of the high-level debate on Wed.
