Ukrainian Grain Market

AGRO PERSPECTIVE «Ukrainian Grain & Oilseed Market » January 22-28, 2010` 3`(257)

Within this week grains market has significantly slackened. Traders didn’t want to purchase free (that is, not assured by corresponding contracts) goods on falling market and therefore even didn’t declare US$ purchase prices in ports.

There were just a few companies which purchased grains at UAH, − Nibulon, Serna and some others. It is to be admitted, these companies will also leave market as soon as they purchase enough grains to cover earlier concluded external contracts. Vivid example to prove this supposition is that Serna has already lowered feed maize purchase price in port Illychivsk from UAH1,500 per MT (efficient within previous weeks) down to UAH1,275 per MT (within this week).
As of this week, grains prices have averagely fallen by UAH30–100 per kg against previous week. Basically, this market slackening was quite predictable earlier (and had been described in Grain previous issue). However, grain holders behavior so far remains incomprehensible: they are quite reluctant in selling their grains at current market prices, with offers/real sales number remaining very low. In our opinion, market slackening will get intensified proportionally to springtime field works approaching, − as agrarians will be urged to replenish their circulating assets in order to start purchasing fertilizers, seeding material,  fuel/lubricants, etc..

Flour millers admit within this week food wheat offer remained minimal low in different regions. Millers say agricultural producers were dictating food wheat sale prices much up against millers purchase prices.
Upon whole, market operators now expect resources prices will start significantly declining since early Feb.
